ISLAND OF CONTRASTS

ISLAND OF CONTRASTS

Marvel at the natural treasures of Lanzarote with visits to an agricultural museum, national park and aloe farm. On the southern end of the island in Tiagua, discover the Agricultural Museum of El Patio. Over 150 years of tradition unfold at this complex of mills and museum exhibits. See old farm tools and photographic murals depicting the local culture while indulging in a taste of wine and cheese. After the museum tour, a local demonstrates how to make locally prized mojo sauce. Journey forth to Timanfaya National Park. This biosphere reserve is known for the 18th century volcanic eruptions of the Fire Mountains. A recording from a locally famous priest who lived through the eruptions elucidates the experience. The day concludes with a trip to The Aloe Vera House, a museum that shares the practices of this healing plant. Sample aloe juice, merengue and other local products to conclude the day.

JAMEOS DEL AGUA & MIRADOR

JAMEOS DEL AGUA

Embark on an excursion that showcases the natural beauty of Lanzarote, occasionally, aided by the artful hand of man. Begin with a drive to Haria, the island’s former capital, where you’ll witness a rather odd sight rising from the desolate landscape – the Valley of 1000 Palms. From here, it’s off to the village of Maguez set in the shadows of the Volcano of the Crown, and, further ahead to your first taste of renowned artists Cesar Manrique’s handiwork. Cut into the jagged cliffs 1,560 feet above the Archipelago Chinijo, lies Mirador del Rio, a seamless union of man and nature. Take in jaw-dropping views before heading to a local Aloe Farm for an eye-opening look at this wonder plant. Your day concludes at another Manrique creation. Sip a fine Lanzarote wine amid Jameos del Agua, a volcanic cave and saltwater lagoon that have been transformed into a stunning entertainment venue.

Timanfaya National Park

CAMEL RIDE

Venture into the volcanic landscape of Timanfaya National Park and instantly be struck by the unearthly silence of this lifeless territory. Your day begins with a fun-filled camel ride, after which, you’ll journey to the land of the Fire Mountains, where thermal forces still bubble just below the earth’s crust. Set off on a Volcano Tour that features a recorded message from a Priest of Yaiza who lived through a violent eruption ages ago. Marvel at the stark beauty of the park’s mighty volcanic craters and the unique fauna that’s sprung up over this rugged terrain. You’ll also venture to Los Hervideros, a tiny inlet where raging surf thunders into jagged sea cliffs formed by ancient lava flows. On your way back to the ship, stop amid the vineyards of La Geria for a tasting of Lanzarote wines and toast your day immersed in the sheer might of Mother Nature.

TREKKING ON MOONSCAPE

TREKKING

Trek through the volcanic reaches of Lanzarote, formed in the wake of a spectacular eruption that took place between 1730 and 1736. Join a local guide on an exploration that takes you through this lunar-like landscape and right up to several craters. Follow footpaths through Timanfaya National Park, where just below your feet geothermal forces still bubble with nature’s might. Trek along the craters and imagine this very land once swallowed up by flowing lava. Hike through old lava gorges and across lava tubes. Witness the unique plants that have sprung up in this unforgiving land, and notice the eerie silence of a realm where life ceases to exit. For hiking and outdoor enthusiasts, this expedition provides an experience and a landscape unlike any you’ve ever explored. In fact, you can expect to feel as if you’ve traveled to another planet entirely.
