Fun Cannes Film Festival Facts
The Cannes Film Festival has been the setting of 12 movies.

The first Cannes Festival Poster was designed by Toulous-Lautrec's cousin.

Cannes was occupied by German and Italian forces during World War Two but was liberated by the Americans in 1944. This liberation operation is said to have involved the American actor Mr. Douglas Fairbanks Jr, who captained a US naval ship.

Cannes regular population is about 73,000 people but during the festival it can be over 200,000.

Cistercian monks are the only inhabitants of the southern island of L’erins, St Honorat, the 
Monks have inhabited the island, belonging to Cannes since AD 410

National Margarita Day
February 22nd, 2019

There are many different stories and myths, beginning as early as 1938, as to how and when the margarita was created.

In the December 1953 issue of Esquire magazine, the margarita cocktail was the “Drink of the Month”.  The recipe as printed was:

  • 1 ounce tequila
  • Dash of Triple Sec (though many prefer 1/2 oz of Cointreau)
  • Juice of 1/2 lime or lemon

Pour over crushed ice, stir.  Rub the rim of a stem glass with rind of lemon or lime, spin in salt—pour, and sip. 
Margaritas can be served on the rocks (shaken with ice), frozen (blended with ice), or straight up (without ice).
Today, lime is not the only flavor of margarita, and the specialists behind the bar have gotten creative mixing dried herbs, infused sugars and exotic salts to enhance both the presentation of the glass and the flavor of the cocktail. 

The margarita was further popularized with the 1977 release of Jimmy Buffett’s song “Margaritaville”.

National Drink Wine Day
February 18th
 

While February 18 this year is observed as Presidents Day it would be a shame not to also celebrate National Drink Wine Day.  While we like to celebrate with wine any day perhaps this day is just a reminder to drink wine.

Wine does have its benefits after all.  Moderate drinkers of wine have lower risks of liver disease, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancers, heart attack and stroke.  It also can reduce the bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase the good (HDL).
